Therapy Dog Development Board and Train

The Therapy Dog Development Board and Train is a two-week immersive program in which your dog boards with a professional trainer for focused training.

This program covers:

  • Obedience commands: come, sit, place, heel, down, off, come to heel, extended-distance sit, extended-distance place, and load up
  • Practical manners: door, greeting, and meal manners
  • Distraction training: handling multiple distractions in multiple environments
  • Therapy dog preparation: preparation for therapy dog testing and certification

The program includes an e-collar, daily photo or video updates from the trainer, and a before-and-after transformation video. It is designed to prepare you and your dog for therapy dog testing and certification.

Important: Completing this training does not automatically certify or register your dog. Testing, registration, and certification requirements depend on the independent therapy dog organization you choose.

Private Obedience Training Options

Owners who want to participate directly may also consider the company’s private in-home training options. These are general obedience programs, not dedicated therapy dog preparation sessions.

Private in-home training is available in Basic Obedience and Basic and Advanced Obedience formats. These programs may help establish a stronger obedience foundation before specialized therapy dog preparation. Availability is limited to select days, and distance-based surcharges may apply.

Contact the team at (405) 833-4622 to ask whether foundational private lessons or the two-week Therapy Dog Development program may better fit your dog’s current training level.

Why Oklahoma City Dog Owners Choose Us for Therapy Dog Preparation

Therapy dog teams may visit hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and other participating facilities after meeting the requirements established by a therapy dog organization and the individual facility. Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy Dog Preparation

What’s the difference between therapy dogs, service dogs, and emotional support animals?

Therapy dogs and their handlers provide comfort in approved settings but do not have ADA public-access rights. Service dogs are individually trained to perform disability-related tasks and may receive ADA public-access protections. Emotional support animals provide comfort through their presence but are not task-trained service animals and do not receive the same public-access rights.

Does my dog need specific qualifications for therapy dog preparation?

Therapy dog candidates are generally calm, manageable, comfortable with unfamiliar people, and responsive to their handlers. Exact age, health, temperament, vaccination, and behavior requirements vary by organization. Off Leash K9 Training of Oklahoma does not publish eligibility standards for this program, so review your chosen organization’s rules and discuss your dog during the consultation.

Does the program include therapy dog certification?

No. The Therapy Dog Development program prepares dogs and owners for testing, but completion does not automatically provide certification or registration. Requirements vary by therapy dog organization and visiting facility. The AKC states that CGC is a prerequisite for many therapy dog certifications, but the AKC does not certify therapy dogs; independent organizations handle that process.

Is the AKC Canine Good Citizen test included?

Off Leash K9 Training of Oklahoma states that it is an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. However, the Therapy Dog Development program description does not list CGC testing as an included feature. Ask the team whether the test is included, offered separately, or recommended by the therapy dog organization you intend to join.
